New drug licensed for ankylosing spondylitis

Sufferers of arthritic diseases such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis will be delighted to hear that a new drug has been licensed and approved for use in the UK. It is the first medicine to combine a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory treatment (NSAID) Ketoprofen, with a proton pump inhibitor, Omeprezole, to prevent ulcers and internal bleeding.

Around 4,000 people each year develop stomach ulcers through taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or neproxen, and some 700 people die from it.

They are taken for pain but you should also take another medication at the same time to prevent stomach ulcers, as some painkillers stop the body providing the liquid that protects the stomach lining from acid.
