Broadly speaking, pain can be classified as either nociceptive pain or neuropathic pain.
Nociceptive pain is familiar to most of us and is the type of pain we experience following an injury, a cut or a burn resulting in damage to tissue. Our nerve endings become activated and transmit signals to the brain resulting in an experience of pain.
Neuropathic pain is quite different in that it arises due a problem with the nerves themselves. The nerves do not function correctly and effectively send the wrong signals to the brain. Unlike nociceptive pain, neuropathic pain is often described as a shooting type pain or stabbing, burning, electric shock type of pain.
