If chronic pain becomes entrenched and has proved resistant to treatment, thoughts necessarily turn to the long term management of the condition.
The focus then turns away from treatment and instead to ways of improving function and quality of life, which includes the management of expectations.
Whilst pain management programmes may be directed by a medical consultant specialising in pain medicine, a multi-disciplinary approach is necessarily adopted, with input from, but not limited to, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and psychologists.
Pain management programmes cannot offer a cure. However, they do have an excellent track record of helping people adapt to living with their chronic pain. Not everyone benefits, but most people experience some benefit from attending such a programme.
A few pain management programmes are residential, often taking place intensively over a two, three or four week period. The intensity of these programmes and the requirement for attendees to focus entirely upon themselves and their condition, often results in far higher success rates than equivalent non-residential programmes. At BLB, we have been extremely successful in arranging funding for many of our clients to attend residential programmes.
We are also acutely aware of the need to put resources in place to help to avoid the ‘crash and burn’ factor that often follows an intensive pain management programme.
“Clare Lowes at BLB Solicitors was my solicitor after I changed from [my previous solicitor]. I can testify that the difference was immediately noticeable. Clare was a whirlwind of activity unlike [my last solicitors]. When you’re in pain 24/7 you have to rely so much on other people and I quickly learnt that I could rely on and trust Clare.” VY (£310,000 received), April 2018
